My first real foray into sensory bin creations

It's funny to think that I powered through college, got my Bachelor's degree in nursing, learned all kinds of intense and precise procedures and skills; and now here I am focusing my day on making rainbow rice. Life is funny like that! Nevertheless, this was a really fun project and super easy to do. And lining the rice up by color REALLY appeased my OCD side :)

The recipe

  1. White rice (dry and uncooked)
  2. Food coloring
  3. Rubbing alcohol
  4. Ziploc bags (gallon or larger)
  5. Cookie tray + paper towels

Basically your ratio is going to be 1 cup of plain white rice to 1tsp rubbing alcohol.

Here's what you do:

  1. Place your cup (or two or three) into a large ziplock bag.
  2. Add your rubbing alcohol and your food coloring of choice - you'll probably want to start with 10-15 drops.
  3. Close bag, squish squash mush the bag. Check rice for color and add any additional food coloring until you have achieved desired results (said in a very medical/fancy way)
  4. Lay out layers of paper towels onto your cookie sheet and spread rice onto the paper towels to dry.
  5. Enjoy! and try not to internally freak out when your kids start mixing all the colors together (like I did)

Also, a warning

I feel like I should show you this picture so you aren't left with a mess and hating me.

That being said, it kept her occupied for SO long! When I took this picture she had been playing there for over 90 minutes. And it vacuums and sweeps up really easily. I promise it's worth it.
